Mammography + Ultrasound + Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Written by Vikki Harmonay | Thu, Oct 1, 2015 @ 14:10 PM

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and probably most of you reading this have been touched by breast cancer in some way. You know someone who’s been diagnosed, someone who’s a survivor, and unfortunately, you may know someone who lost the fight with this nasty disease.

In recent years, there’s been a push to improve breast cancer screening, especially for women with dense breasts. Studies have shown that performing ultrasound, MRI or molecular breast imaging in combination with a screening mammogram has resulted in the detection of more cancers. While this is good news, there’s also a drawback: it also finds more benign masses, which leads to more biopsies and false positives.

The easiest, less costly and most available test that doesn’t result in extra radiation is an ultrasound, according to Mid Michigan’s Medical Center Director of Breast Imaging Lindsay Zeeb, M.D., who is also a radiologist.  These technologists use a handheld device that provides images of the breast tissue in real time.  The beam can also be adjusted in order to see areas of concern more clearly. The automated breast ultrasound device is called ABUS or automated Breast Ultrasound.

It’s great to see so many organizations placing the spotlight on the fight against Breast Cancer in October. NFL players wear pink, local businesses decorate storefronts in pink, and there are a wide variety of activities that raise funds to combat breast cancer and support research.

Thousands of breast cancer survivors, family members and supporters will be participating in the 39.5 miles Avon 39 Walk to End Breast Cancer on October 17- 18 in New York City.  They all raise funds and awareness, and we applaud them.

The donations will be managed and disbursed by the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade. Funds will help provide access to care for those who most need it, fund educational programs and accelerate research into new treatments and potential cures.

During the month of October, let’s celebrate the battles won against this disease. Let’s send a prayer that a cure will be found.  Let’s be thankful for organizations that provide funding and support. And remember—everyone looks great in pink!
