What’s that noise? Why is my CT Scanner hesitating between techniques? Does it mean my CT Tube is starting to fail?
If you’ve got a CT Scanner, you know that the X-ray tube is the heart of the system. And if the tube isn’t operating correctly, it can end up costing a lot of money. A lot. That’s why it’s so important to keep tabs on how it’s functioning.
The good news is, an X-ray tube will actually provide you with warning signs that its lifespan is waning or there’s an issue with it. Here are some symptoms that your X-ray tube may be on its last legs.
Hummmmmm
If you hear a continuous “humming” sound while you’re taking a CT scan, chances are the bearings inside the X-ray tube housing are wearing out.
Scan Interruption
Are your getting arc-related error messages while you’re taking a scan? While some electrical arcing can be tolerated by your CT Scanner, if you’re getting a lot of them it’s a sign your X-ray tube is wearing out.
Tube Cooling
Is your CT scanner stopping between techniques to give the X-ray tube a break? It means your scanner is reaching the upper limits of its operating temperature. If the breaks get longer and longer, you definitely have a problem.
Immediate Shutdown
If you are receiving an Arc Error with immediate shutdown, it means your system is arching too often. However, this is more likely to happen if your tube is cold and hasn’t run through its warm-up. While you need to allow time for warm-up at the beginning of each scanning schedule, it could be a sign that your tube is failing.
If you’re experiencing any of the above signs, it’s probably time for a new X-ray tube. To be sure, contact your imaging equipment service organization and have your system inspected. Often times these symptoms can be addressed and the life of your tube can be prolonged. But if the symptoms can’t be addressed, it’s time to find a new X-ray tube fast.
