Are you considering adding a Mobile MRI unit to your healthcare facility? Mobile MRI units are installed in trailers and have specific requirements for installation. Here are some important considerations when planning your mobile MRI trailer site layout.
- What is the available space for parking and access?
- What are the site’s entry and exit conditions? Are the any height restrictions, narrow passages, sharp turns or other obstacles that might affect transportation or placement of the unit?
- Does your site have sufficient electrical infrastructure to support MRI, or will you need a generator?
- Are there local zoning or permitting restrictions on where the mobile MRI can be placed?
As a rule, most mobile MRI systems are available in this trailer size configuration: 8'-6" W X 48'-3" L X 13'-6" H
- Mobile MRI trailers require a rigid, level surface. The weight of the medical imaging trailer can cause asphalt to warp, especially during hot summer months. You must provide a stable base, as your MRI system is sensitive to vibrations. Using steel plates, dampeners or a wood platform can help stabilize the trailer.
- Patient lift access clearance—When you’re planning the site layout for a mobile MRI unit, remember that the patient lift is located on the passenger side of the trailer. You’ll want to provide ample clearance in the area to accommodate the patient lift, which may protrude up to 8 feet. Additionally, stairs for staff access are located next to the patient lift. Be sure to provide unimpeded patient access to and from the medical imaging mobile unit.
You’ll also need ramps or lifts for ADA compliance, especially if the Mobile MRI is used frequently with patient access.
- Clearance at the rear of trailer—Every medical imaging trailer is outfitted with a large RF-sealed door at the rear. This provides access for service personnel. When the rear door is fully opened, it might protrude as much as five feet. Remember, cars that are parked too close to the rear of the MRI could cause image quality issues. Make sure the rear service entrance is unobstructed at all times. There must be proper clearance for the removal and repair of system components.
- Distance to power supply, Mobile MRI systems rely on external power sources supplied from shore power or generators. When you’re planning the layout of the site, consider the distance from the trailer to the power supply.
