Choosing The Right X-Ray Isn’t Always Easy

Since 1993, Atlantis Worldwide has been selling the full gambit of used medical imaging equipment and during that time, we’ve heard and seen it all. Of course, we love it when a potential buyer calls us and knows exactly what they are looking for.  Or at least they think they do. But oftentimes we have to burst their bubble and let them know the downside (or pitfalls) to their choice. For example, many times clients think they want to buy a portable X-ray system when actually a stationery system will fit their needs better.  Sure, a portable system is more affordable.  It’s also a great solution for facilities without much space. But portable systems were designed specifically for bedside procedures and for use during surgery. They were not designed for every day use.

If you find yourself looking for an X-Ray for your clinic, facility or practice, here are two important things to consider:

1) Automatic Exposure Control: Automatic Exposure Control (commonly known as AEC) is a feature that enables you to automatically shoot an image at the kV and mA power that is necessary, depending on the procedure that is being performed. It is only found on stationary X-Ray systems.  Without this feature, the technician needs to set the kV and mA settings manually.  This can lead to images that are over or under exposed. AEC is also very useful in achieving good consistent x-ray film densities, regardless of patient size and shape. Without AEC, an x-ray could lead to longer exam times and result in an excess amount of radiation coming into contact with the patient and technician. 

2) Image Quality:  Portable X-Ray systems don’t have the penetration power that a stationary X-Ray system has. Now, this doesn’t matter much if you are performing X-Rays on extremities.  However, if you are performing procedures on the chest or abdomen, the image quality from a portable X-Ray system would be significantly inferior to that of a stationary system. 

There is a time and a place for everything. Buying a Mini Cooper doesn’t make sense if you have a family of six. Likewise, it’s usually best to buy a stationary X-Ray system if you’re looking for a day-in-and-day-out workhorse.  The good news is, if you consider buying a used or refurbished system, you’ll still get an affordable solution.
