National Radiologic Technology Week is Worth Celebrating

Each year, 95 million medical imaging scans are performed. 95 million! That’s something to celebrate, and during the week of November 2-8, the medical community will do just that. It’s National Radiologic Technology Week,  an annual event sponsored by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) to celebrate the important role medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals plan in patient care and health care safety. The theme of this year’s weeklong event is Many Views with One Vision.

As part of the weekend celebration, ASRT sponsored a “Strike a Pose” contest, with entries and winning images available for viewing on Instagram at #MYNRTW and in the October/November issue of ASRT Scanner. Congratulations to overall winner Emmanuel Jeffrey Marquez, R.T. Adam Mercer won “Best Represents National Radiologic Technology Week” and “Best Video” winner was Laura Bronowicz.

The first national Radiologic Technology Week was held July 22-29, 1979. The week of the annual celebration was then changed to the first week of November, to commemorate the anniversary of the discovery of the x-ray by German physicist Wilhem Rontgen on Nov. 8, 1895. His discovery and future work earned him the first Nobel Prize in physics in 1901.

While many had observed the effects of x-ray beams before, Rontgen was the first to study them systematically. His experiments involved the passing of electric current through gases at extremely low pressure. He worked in a totally dark room with a well-covered discharge tube, which resulted in the illumination of a barium platinocyanice-covered screen. The screen became fluorescent, even though it was place in the path of the rays two meters away from the discharge tube.

At Atlantis Worldwide, we appreciate the dedication of rad techs around the world, which utilize the imaging systems we provide for hospitals, clinics and other facilities.
