Rising Costs For CT, MRI & C-Arms

Written by Vikki Harmonay | Wed, Feb 9, 2022 @ 16:02 PM

Did you know that end user prices for MRI and CT scans have gone up more than 50% in the past six months? And whether you buy equipment from third-party providers or OEMs, equipment costs have also increased.

Blame It on the Pandemic & Inflation

Supply chain disruptions during COVID-19 are plaguing the medical imaging industry, just like other major industries. It’s been difficult to get components like semiconductors and mylar rings, thanks to shelter-in-place orders and shutdowns. Factories can’t keep up with orders from pent-up demand. As a result, OEMS have delayed contracts or even cancelled them.

Shipping costs are also to blame, with rates doubling and even tripling, due to increases in fuel costs, delays and backlogs.

Another complication? Many businesses in the U.S. received financial relief from the government, including healthcare facilities. This extra cash has inspired these operations to buy new imaging equipment or to update existing equipment. This rise in demand, combined with the reduction in supply from manufacturing shutdowns, is why prices are higher and continue to rise.

Prices probably won’t even out until all the links in the supply chain catch up with unrequited demand—probably in Q4 of 2022 we hope. That said, if you want new or upgraded equipment, it might be wise to start the buying process now. The extra lead time might help you avoid the additional costs of short turnaround. It’s also wise to let your buying decisions be opportunity-driven instead of date-driven. Try giving your medical imaging equipment provider the chance to work around the availability of equipment instead of a hard deadline. That way, you’re more likely to get what you want, at a better price.
