Good news for Royal Phillips. It just received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its new detector-based spectral computed tomography (CT) radiotherapy solution.
The Philips Spectral CT 7500 RT integrates the unique tumor visualization and tissue characterization capabilities of spectral CT into cancer treatment and planning. This is considered to be the next big step in personalized cancer care. It allows radiation oncologists to precisely target radiation therapy to specific physiological characteristics of a patient’s tumor. This will minimize damage to the healthy tissue surrounding the tumor and will reduce potential unwanted side effects.
By combining true conventional and spectral CT capabilities in a single scan, Spectral CT 7500 RT is a game-changer for radiation oncology imaging. It’s the first radiation therapy CT Scanner that offers respiratory-gated spectral imaging. Not only will radiation oncologists have all of the benefits of 4D conventional CT, but it will also apply improved visualization and quantification of spectral CT. Another benefit for radiotherapy departments will be the reduction of the costs of additional scans. It will also enhance accuracy and enable more effective treatment plans for more cancer patients.
Dan Xu, Global Business Leader of CT at Philips said, “Tumor delineation, beam attenuation, and respiratory motion are critical factors in radiotherapy planning. The spectral information provided by Spectral CT 7500 RT enhances tissue characterization, enabling wider access to highly personalized and precisely targeted treatment for more patients without adding extra steps to current radiotherapy workflows.”
Compared to conventional CT, Spectral CT has been shown to reduce proton stopping-power ratio (SPR) error by more than 50 percent. This spares healthy tissue and improves the accuracy of radiation treatment. With Philips Spectral CT 7500, you can acquire both conventional CT and spectral CT information in a single scan. The device automatically creates the SPR map and direct electron density (ED) results with less than 1% deviation. This enhances both the dose calculation and the accuracy of radiotherapy planning.
