At Atlantis Worldwide, we’re always paying attention to what’s going on in the medical imaging community. Recent news of note includes the acquisition of Toshiba Medical Systems by Canon, after the deal received regulatory approvals in all of the countries in which both companies operate. The company was acquired for $6 billion.
Canon’s Board of Directors finalized the deal in Tokyo in December, making Toshiba Medical Systems a subsidiary of Canon. As you know, Canon is already active in the digital radiography segment of the medical imaging industry.
The parent company of Toshiba Medical Systems decided to sell the business following an accounting fraud scandal that occurred in 2015.
Canon has a five-year plan for growth, with goals to grow through a “grand strategic transformation” and “cultivate its healthcare business.” The acquisition is no surprise, since Toshiba has a huge market share of CT scanners in Japan and is growing globally. Its products include diagnostic x-ray, ultrasound, nuclear medicine systems, MRI and also in vitro diagnostics.
The acquisition will provide accelerated entry into new fields for Canon, including the biomedical business. There are also opportunities for shared production technology, which can improve the level of quality in design, microfabrication technologies, an optimized productions system and overall quality improvement. It should also enhance R&D capabilities and accelerate the development of innovative new products and services.
It will be interesting to see how this acquisition will impact Canon’s business and the competitive marketplace. We’ll be sure to keep you posted!
